and Stargate Universe left my life…

Save Stargate UniverseI couldn’t resist anymore and an hour ago I watched the series finale for Stargate Universe… The Save Stargate Universe collective asked fans to write something for Fox News in their facebook page as the news of hordes of angry SG fans try to save the show. Well, I thought it would be nice to publish here what I wrote at the Fox News facebook page…

I watched the original Stargate movie when it was released here, a thousand years ago. I liked it. Never got too crazy about it.

Around five years ago, the first season of Stargate Atlantis was released on DVD here in Spain. I was moving to my new home, and had plenty of time so Stargate Atlantis became the first thing I watched at my new home. I loved it. By that time season 3 had already started in the US. I anxiously waited for season 2 and 3 to be released on DVD. By the end of Season 3 I was completely hooked by the Stargate Universe. I realized that Stargate had become the only real hardcore science fiction show of the 21st century (along with Galactica, at that time). Loved it so much that I couldn’t wait for seasons 4 and 5 to be released on DVD in Spain, so I got them directly from the internet and watch them with spanish subtitles.

I was very very sad when it was announced that Atlantis had been cancelled. But they announced a new Stargate show was in the making, and that compensated the sad feelings. Stargate Universe started, and I was hooked since episode 1. I really loved the differences with Atlantis, the feeling of a more mature, dark, drama based science fiction show. Technically was gorgeous, actors were incredibly good and the storyline promising. I think some of the season 1 episodes were a bit “flat” and sometimes you had the feeling the script writers didn’t know where to go… or maybe it was just a reflection of what the characters of the show were feeling, abandoned on a huge and ancient ship far away from Earth, not knowing where they were going. Anyway, I loved the show and was very happy a second season would be given to us.

Season 2 came, and each and every episode was better than the previous one…. after seeing all Star Trek shows, Atlantis and many other sci-fi movies and shows, I think some of the stuff Stargate Universe put in season 2 was truly original, motivating, moving…. just awesome. Then I knew about the cancellation and I must admit I was not overly surprised (but very very sad). I think the show is too advanced and clever for the hordes of people watching TV. Think about it, shows like Stargate Universe and CSI are light years away, but just think what show gets renewed every year and wins all shares…. yeahp, that’s right, CSI. How can something so advanced and challenging as Stargate Universe compete with all those run of the mill shows…. Well, it seems it cannot.

I really think that a 3rd season would have nailed the story of the Destiny and its crew, but I’m happy that the Stargate Universe creators gifted us two amazing seasons of the best science fiction ever written. And I’m thankful to the show creators for one of the most beautiful finales I’ve ever seen. It’s so great they managed to build a season finale that works great as a season finale (definitely much better than Atlantis series(or some other very well know shows) finale!!).

I’m sad when I think all the potential the show had, the great stories that we’re going to miss, the beautiful sights and sounds of an adventure that deserved some more time and space to bloom to its true potential.

Please, someone, rescue Stargate Universe and let Destiny’s mission to continue to the edge of the universe!
